Achievements

Prof. Rajasekharan Pillai is considered as a pioneer in the field of solid phase peptide synthesis. His contributions in developing hydrophilic polymer supports for the synthesis of large peptides had obtained world-wide acceptance. His major research contributions span over a wide area of solid phase organic synthesis: polymer supported reagents, molecular rearrangements in crosslinked polymer matrices, photochemistry of 2-nitrobenzyl systems and azobenzene systems. The development of photocleavable protecting groups using the photochemistry of 2-nitrobenzyl systems was unique of its kind in the field of orthogonal protection- deprotection strategy.
